Edit: my post crossed with previous one above...
What exactly happens?
Is your phone unlocked for use on any network?
Do you get any signal and can you connect to the 48 network (or O2 if 48 is not listed)?
Can you receive calls or texts?
When you log into your online account what does it say about your account, number etc.?

You may also need a small credit balance (e.g. €1) to cover the cost of the UK SMS message that may be sent in order to activate the iPhone with your 48 SIM. Such messages are not covered by membership.
Oh - you did buy membership I presume?

Did you buy membership?
And top up your credit balance by at least €1 to cover the cost of the SMS that may be sent during iPhoneactivation while syncing with iTunes?
What does your online account say about your membership status, phone number (don't post it - just check that it's what you expect) and your credit balance? Are there any messages indicating problems with your SIM/account?
If you have done this and resync'd and it doesn't work then you may need to contact Apple to get them to allow your phone to be used on 48.
It's a common problem and more hassle for some iPhone users than others it seems.
Hope this helps.
