Why do I have no service in places I always had service?

I just switched from an iphone 4s to 5. I have never had any trouble with 48 signal but now I lose signal and the phone displays "no service" quite regularly, especially when I leave the town centre. When I search for the carrier in these places 48 is not on the list. I have data roaming wsitched on. Is there anything else I can try?
