It should be immediate if the current membership has already expired.
What does your online account say about your current membership status and expiry date?
Does it also list a "next" membership and start date?
Remember if your membership expires 1st May then that means tonight at midnight and the new one will start.

What allowance balances are displayed?
Were you barred for breaching the fair usage limits last month?
