You never bought membership at all?
I'm curious - why not?
When did you activate your SIM and start using it?
If it's several months ago then perhaps your account has been suspended/cancelled because it is deemed inactive?
Can you log into your online account?
Hope this helps.

Power off, clean the SIM contacts gently, reseat it and power on again.
Any help?
If not can you do a manual search for networks and check what networks you can see?
If you can see 48 can you connect to it?
Has anything changed on the phone - e.g. software update?
If you are still having problems try putting a small amount of cash credit (at least 25c) on your account as it may be needed in order to activate the iPhone on the network. This may take a few hours and may require a sync with iTunes.
Do you have membership now?
You will need membership in order to be able to send texts or make calls etc.
Hope this helps.
