It may also be due to the stupid Apple iPhone activation stuff.
Apple iPhone/iMessage/FaceTime activation needs to send an SMS message to a UK activation server on some networks.
On 48 these will not send if you don't have cash credit on your account to pay for them (8c per SMS).
And of course Apple don't tell you this if it fails to send.
Try putting €1 cash credit on your account, then switch the phone off and on again and see if it activates and the "SIM not valid" message goes away.
