I topped up my internet by 1gb and after minor use it was used up, couple of emails. What could the issue be?

You'd need to check what apps are using data to see what's using it up.
Most phones have a basic data usage monitor built in.
But there are lots of apps (many of them free) that will give a more detailed analysis of what apps and services are using data.
