SIM suddenly not working - not registered on network

When I woke up this morning my service had a circle with a line through it, the service bars came back after a restart but I have just tried to make a call and it's saying "not registered on a network" I tried restarting a couple times even took the sim out n all put it back in all that jazz still getting the same message

Did anything change with the phone? 

Software update, settings changes, factory reset/restore, new handset, returned from roaming abroad?

If you do a manual search for networks can you see and connect to 48?

What make and model of phone is it? 

Can you try the SIM in another phone unlocked for use on any network?

Maybe the SIM is faulty and you need to try a replacement?
