Roaming data expired

How do I add data / top up roaming when the standard allowance expires before auto renewal date?? I tried to purchase add on but it wouldn’t permit me either as it kept saying that I had loads left (which I did, if local/home data) but roaming allowance was nil or if I tried to transfer any of my banked, it again went into local…?!!

When I asked 48 support about this they told me that once you use up your roaming data allowance you can't get additional data until a new membership eventually kicks in. That was back in 2020. I presume that that's still the case.

However others, including the person who replied there, claimed that buying a data add-on provided extra roaming data. So it's a bit unclear to me.
