Having to enable roaming to get things working is OK.
It's because 48 is a "virtual" carrier operating on the Three network so some phones think that they are roaming even when they are on the home network.
You cannot run up any additional charges having roaming enabled to get things working so don't worry about that.
Have you done a speed test to check the internet speed on your new and old phones to get some hard data rather than subjective impressions?

Hope this helps.

See here:

Having them configured incorrectly could result in slower than expected speeds.
Hope this helps.

Great - did you have to change anything?
What sort of speeds are you getting?
Are you getting H/H+ most of the time?
