You need to configure your internet/APN settings for the carrier data internet connection to work.

As far as I know 850MHz is not used in Ireland but 2100MHz is.

Are you sure that you followed my post above to configure your internet/APN settings?
Do you definitely have a data allowance as part of your membership or a data add-on?
Did you configure all other settings as advised?
Can you make/receive calls and send/receive texts?
When you are not connected to wifi what does System settings > About phone > Status > SIM status > Mobile network type show?
