I think that this (texts being sent multiple times) can happen when you are in an area of low/poor coverage.
On the other hand I have seen reports of people complaining of texts being sent multiple times on the Nexus 5 using Hangouts which may be separate from this? E.g.:

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/bEEdKw8qDfE
(and many other links too...).
If you were on 48, with the same SIM, in the same area and on a different phone and you did not have this problem before but have it now with the N5 then it would suggest that it's the N5 which is at fault here...
Are you using Hangouts for texting?
Hope this helps.

There are many reports of the Hangouts "multiple SMS" problem but no obvious fix.
One thing I've seen suggested is to clear the app's data/cache and maybe also switch the Android runtime from ART back to Dalvik. You could try that if you wanted to see if it helped you to get Hangouts working properly but if you are happy with a different messaging client then I guess it's not worth the hassle?
Hope this helps.
