Roaming in Italy - cannot seem to get my iPhone to connect

Hi

I am currently in Italy and I am having trouble getting my iPhone 5 to roam (I bought the text and voice add ons before i left). The phone seems to spend most of it's time looking for a network and I have only managed to get a connection once.

I had a similar issue in France before Christmas where it would not seem to be able to find a network to roam onto.

Is there anything I can do to force it to find a roaming network in Italy?
