I have credit but my membership is expired can I not use this credit to text as I'm abroad???

You need  to buy membership in order to use services. 

Not sure if you can do this by text while abroad?

If that doesn't work then you'll need to find a way to log into your online account and buy membership.

If you are roaming in the EU then be aware that the EU calls/texts add-ons are better value (assuming you will use them up) than the regular call/text charges:

i have credit, or so i`m told, [bought €10 at 12.07 17.10.2014 and €10 last week] but cannot call/text and am told my membership has expired???????????

On 48 credit is like diamond dust.

You need to convert it into membership or if you have a membership you can convert it into addons.

Credit alone doesn't let you make calls/send texts.
You need membership.
You probably need to buy a membership and pay for it from your credit balance.
