Visiting Japan - will 48 roaming work?

We are visiting Japan in next few months.
What is required to make sure phone operates as expected, is it just a case of having a healthy balance?

48 don't support roaming in Japan so it's got going to work there at all. 

48 only support roaming in the regions/countries listed here:

Most newer phones accept an eSIM alongside your physical 48 SIM so you could download the GoMoWorld app for example and buy a data plan.
