Hi all, I am going to South Africa on holidays. I have a 48 rolling contract on my Apple iPhone which is unlocked. I know 48 do not do an eSIM but can I buy one online say from Revolut and will it work while I am on holidays? Apologies in advance if it is a silly question but I’m not great at technology from the senior community! Many thanks!

If the eSIM provider supports use in South Africa then it should work but it won't be using your 48 phone number and people will not be able to contact you on that number nor will you be able to communicate using it.
You'll need to read up on what the eSIM provider(s) that you're considering offer.
Ultimately this doesn't really have anything to do with 48.

The eSIM from Revolut does data only as far as I know so you'll need to ensure that you set your iPhone to use it for mobile data while in South Africa.
I don't think 48 has any roaming agreements in South Africa so you wouldn't be able to make/receive regular calls

Correct, 48 don't support any roaming services in South Africa.
Only in these regions/countries:
