Google Pixel phones now (Dec 2024) work with 5G on 48?

See here:

According to this post from @MariuszZ3470, the December 2024 software update for Pixel 8 Pro (and other Pixel phones?) finally allows 5G to work on 48 (presumably because Google now whitelists 48/Liffey Telecom for 5G access?).

Maybe Google Pixel phone users on 48 can clarify if this is the case after they apply the latest update?

Also ensure that your APN settings are configured correctly by texting "APN" to 50048 and following the instructions here:

I am a Tesco Mobile Ireland user and unfortunately this problem (no 5G) is very much still present. I have a Pixel 8 Pro 256GB. (I also have a 48 SIM.) I wanted to post this here as other Tesco Mobile Ireland users might be searching and finding these pages on the 48 Community. Unfortunately there is no similar Tesco Mobile Ireland forum/community.

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to get Tesco Mobile Ireland to take the problem seriously (or if they are doing, they've somehow managed to convince me of the opposite). The most I have had is, "Our technical team have advised that there is a known issue with using 5G on Google Pixel phones. Unfortunately we cannot resolve this from our end." And later, "Unfortunately this is an issue that both Tesco Mobile and Google are unable to resolve. There are no efforts in progress due to this." Of course, I have asked the question, if neither Tesco Mobile nor Google are able to resolve it, who can? I have had no response to that. In reality, I'm sure that it could be resolved between Tesco Mobile and Google, but I'm not seeing any indication that it is being pursued at all.

Regarding 48, I got my SIM partly to test 5G coverage and speed, which of course is via the same underlying 3 network. Much to my frustration, 5G cannot be tried unless the €12.99 plan is bought.

In the 48 FAQs, there is currently an FAQ: 'Is it possible to try 48 before you buy?'
'To make sure we’re a compatible match, you get free 1GB data once you order and activate your 48 SIM. It lets you check our data coverage speeds before you move your number or buy a plan with us.'

It doesn't mention that this doesn't include 5G. It should mention that. This try before you buy facility (which would otherwise be a great thing) is useless if it is 5G coverage and speed that you want to try before buying.

5G should work now as stated in this thread as a software update that gave 48 Google approval seemed to release last December.

You could ask about Tesco Mobile over on - https://www.boards.ie/categories/mobiles, but I presume they just haven't figured it out with Google yet to get approval.

Thanks for the boards.ie suggestion. 👍

Agreed, sounds like they haven't figured it out. But, infuriatingly, sounds like they are not even trying to figure it out, and are not interested in doing so, despite advertising a 5G service and selling it to me.

Yeah there's threads everywhere of people all over Europe in similar situations with operators that have not been whitelisted by Google yet. It seems Google are one of the only manufactures to require this whitelisting and it involves the operator having to get in contact with Google.

48 took a good while but Sky seem to have sorted it already after only launching in Sept 24 - https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Mobile/No-5g-Ireland/

Eir had the same issue also - https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058179390/google-pixel-5-and-eir-5g

As of Oct there is no 5G available on pixel 6 pro despite trying every setting possible. I swapped 48sim to my vivo 200 ultra and it worked right from the bat, also the three sim I have in vivo picked 5G on pixel 6 pro instantly. What a shame.

Are you sure that the phone is updated to the latest software version?

Maybe Google never issued an update for this model that fixes the problem (not whitelisting 48/Liffey Telecom APN for 5G access)?

Running Android 16 with security update from 5th Sep. Not sure how to check whether google whitelisted 48 for this model...

If you do a manual scan for networks do you see "48 (4G)" and "48 (5G)" or just the former?

When your APN settings are configured correctly are you getting 4G or 5G connectivity and mobile data speeds?

The correct APN settings are outlined here:

On Android you can text "APN" to 50048 and follow the instructions here to configure them:

If you still can't get 5G then maybe one of the Google Pixel forums or their customer support can assist or explain.

Upon manual selection I'm only seeing 48 LTE and 48 3G, there is no 48 5G option.

I have set all APN setting as per instructions multiple times, even deleted APN and tried over, but still no luck.

What I'm unable to set is MCC – 272 & MNC – 11 as these are simply not in the options.

Also when sending text APN to 50048 I get a msg back from 48 that my device does not support this service.

I've no choice, but to switch to another provider.

Cheers for replies.

If the MCC/MCC options aren't configurable then they're probably set correctly automatically.

Especially if 4G connectivity is working ok.

Have you tried a replacement SIM in case that makes any difference?

However the issue may be that Google never issued an update for this model that whitelisted 48/Liffey Telecom for 5G access.

If that's the issue then the same problem will almost certainly affect Tesco and any other virtual mobile network that uses the Liffey Telecom APN.

And possibly other virtual providers too.
