Move number

I tried to move my number before unlocking my phone, was this a mistake? they gave me a new number instead of moving my old one, and i no longer have access to my old number with my original carrier. I'm in the process of unlocking my phone, so when i finish will i be able to try again, or have i lost it completely?

Unlocking your phone has nothing to do with porting your number.
