Just to clarify - you don't HAVE to buy roaming add-ons for things to work but it is generally cheaper to do so.

Roaming add-ons are EU specific and not relevant if roaming outside the EU.

Outside the EU all services are charged from your credit balance and your membership or add-on bundled allowances (e.g. for calls, texts etc.) are not used.
