Network issues abroad

Hi,
I am currently in New York and am having difficulty connecting to a network.
My phone is constantly searching for a network and then will connect to t mobile for a second and then it drops again and continues to search.
I have cellular data and dats roaming switched on and am in areas where there is plenty of service.
Please help as I cannot use my phone currently and the constant searching is eating my battery. I have purchased credit to use over here and am unable to do anything. The network selection bar in my settings sometimes appears but then keeps disappearing

This is a common problem with iPhones roaming abroad.

You might have to try a few times to "catch" the relevant option when the phone manages to make a brief connection to a network.
