i have just recieved my free sim to try out 48. will i be able to make and recieve calls/texts while on trial?

You may be able to receive calls and texts but I don't think that you'll be able to make calls and send texts until you buy a membership.
With the free SIM all you get is a free 1GB of data - no free calls/texts.
