Porting number - when to insert 48 SIM?

Hi I got my new sim for 48 and now I'm changing my exiting Vodafone number to 48. its showing that will take 2 to 4 hours for that. Question is that during this time do i need to insert the new 48 sim in my mobile? Kindly advice.
