Switzerland - no connection

Hello all. (This is not internet related but there's forum for connection issues.) I just got back from Switzerland. While there I had no connection at all. I couldn't receive any calls on my 48 phone number. I made sure to have a bit of credit as it's outside the EU, but no avail. Does anyone know why this is and how I can avoid it next time? Freaked out the family when they couldn't reach me.

Hi, thanks for your response.
Yes I know how to change the settings; I have to do it manually every time I cross a border because I lose Internet right away when I do and leave the network selection on automatic.
My phone would only indicate a 2g connection in Switzerland, and I couldn't find a way to receive calls at all /:.
