Did you enable data and data roaming?

If not then do this.

If you have them already enabled then try APN type = *

Cannot connect to data - think followed all instructions? Any ideas what am doing wrong??

think i'm up and running.  had tried the * for APN earlier and didnt work but seems to done the job this time.

Can you confirm that it is working now?

And that APN type = * rather than default,mms,supl made the difference?

Sorted with those settings.  The APN type doesn't matter default,mms,supl or * will work.  I think the problem was that I was in an area will poor coverage yesterday.
