How to set Roaming for Calls/SMS/Data to disabled on 48 SIM

JeanJoseG3906
Newcomer
I have had a Contact Care chat conversation which I will paste below, for full context and details.
I want to be able to not worry about Outside EU/UK roaming charges if I forget to disable the SIM when travelling.
On a Yallo SIM in Switzerland, this is how it works, the SIM simply doesn't work at all outside Switzerland, unless I purchase a Roaming plan for the travel time. I want to do the same or similar with 48, making it simply not work outside EU/UK by default.
However the agent I spoke to was not able to help with that, as you can see below. Does anyone know how to do this or who should I contact about it?
Thanks
Jean.

I'll help you with your roaming issue.

Please help me with the make and model of your phone.

Gayatri - 16:40
I've been getting network or sim card error when trying to activate call barring settings, with the standard 0000 or 1234 pins
You - 16:41
Is that it is asking you for SIM PIN/PUK code?
Gayatri - 16:42
No
A different pin
Secret pin for the sim that you may be able to tell me
Usually also needed to unlock a sim, I read online
You - 16:46
You can do is enter any random PIN 1234 three times, so it blocks your SIM. You can then use your unique PUK code to unblock it again.
Once when you enter the PUK code number into your phone and you'll then be asked to create a new PIN.
Enter the new PIN once and you'll then be asked to confirm it a second time. Just like that your back up and running again!
Gayatri - 16:46
The SIM restriction password it is called
No, it is not that pin
You - 16:47
Please reinsert the 48 SIM in your phone and see if it ask you for the SIM pin.
Gayatri - 16:48
It is not that pin
I will explain
When I go to Settings
Network settings
Call settings
Carrier-related settings
Call Barring
Then it loads "charging settings"
Actually "Reading Settings..."
Then
You - 16:51
Okay.
Gayatri - 16:51
I have unticked boxes options I can toggle for both incoming and outgoing calls
I want to activate it for international roaming calls, incoming and outgoing.
When I try
It says
Enter password
And it is 4 digits
My sim pin doesn't work there
Neither works 0000 or 1234
You - 16:52
Okay.

Please go to settings >> Mobile network >> Access Point Names (APN) and let me know which APN settings you can find on your phone.
Gayatri - 16:53
All things I tried say this error
"Netword or SIM card error"
Ok I will tell you the APN settings

You - 16:58

Gayatri - 16:58
Ok I've done all that, I'll try the call barring again
Still the same as before
Same error
You - 17:05
Okay.
Gayatri - 17:05
Do you know the correct restriction password for 48 Sim?
The new one I received recently
I've seen there is a cap by default of 60eur or so, I want the cap to be 0
You - 17:06
Without having to disable the sim
You - 17:08
Plesae try the 48 SIM in another phone and see if that works for you.
Gayatri - 17:08
I don't have another phone
You - 17:08
To rule if the SIM is issue or handset you will need to test SIM in some spare phone that belongs to someone else like friends or family. If that option isn't available the get it tested in local phone shop in other phone.

If it doesn't work in other handset too then please reorder a SIM from My 48 etc.
Gayatri - 17:09
Data roaming outside of EU/UK - What is the data roaming limit?
There are two roaming caps that are automatically applied to all customers’ accounts.

The first cap is set at a default value of €61.50 (inc. VAT). The second cap is set at a default value of €123 (inc. VAT). You can choose to continue to use data beyond these caps and remove them by texting REMCAP1 or REMCAP2 respectively to 1745.

The above is from your FAQ, is there any option for cap to be 0?
The SIM works perfectly
I only want to change the roaming settings
If I'm abroad, I don't want to pay if I forget to disable the sim and someone tries to call me
Same for receiving SMS
Or data usage
I just want it to automatically none of the above work roaming, by default
You - 17:11
Okay.
Ensure that Call Barring & Call Diverts are cancelled.
Gayatri - 17:12
They are all off, I tried turning barring on, unsuccessfully
You - 17:12
Okay.
Please try a different steps on your phone and see if that works :

1) Open 48 SIM MENU App or SIM Toolkit App on your phone
2) Select When abroad (you will see Network Selection there)
3) Select Automatic or Manual
4) You will see International - roaming profile and local - home profile
5) Select International - roaming profile.
Gayatri - 17:15
I know that for example with Yallo in Switzerland, their sim, roaming for calls, sms and data doesn't work at all, unless you to purchase a roaming plan. I want to do similar with my 48 sim, I'll check what you sent above now.
You - 17:16
Let me know how it goes.
Gayatri - 17:17
I've done that, it is something I had to always do before when travelling for the sim to work, in Ireland I had to use Automatic, and abroad I had to use Manual, and pick a network myself. But this changed nothing now when trying again to turn on call barring
But also I heard this new sim I got now was sent to avoid having to change those settings each time when travelling
You - 17:19
Yes.
Gayatri - 17:20
Same as with Yallo in Switzerland, their sim, roaming for calls, sms and data doesn't work at all, unless you to purchase a roaming plan. I want to do the same with 48, how can I do that?
I don't need to deactivate the Switzerland sim when abroad to avoid roaming charger.
Charges
You - 17:21
Do you have other network provider SIM in your phone?
Gayatri - 17:21
Yes, Yallo, my phone is dual sim
I have 48 and Yallo
You - 17:22
Okay.

Are you in Yallo at the moment?
Gayatri - 17:22
No, all the above was done on Sim1 slot, which is 48 sim
Right now I am in France
You - 17:23
Okay.

Please remove the Yallo SIM and let 48 SIM be inside and see if that makes any difference.
Gayatri - 17:23
I actually have to leave you now, could you please forward this conversation to someone who may have more knowledge on this specific topic about Roaming settings and call/sms/data barring when roaming outside EU/UK or how to change the caps to 0 or manually change the settings for my Sim as an exception? And continue the communication via email with juan-jose@gmx.com
Thanks
Is that possible?
You - 17:27
You're welcome.

I totally understand your concern in this.

You can reinstate each of the caps by texting ADDCAP1 or ADDCAP2 respectively to 1745
Gayatri - 17:29
No, that is not what I need, can we please continue by email? Thanks
You - 17:30
I'm really sorry for that.
Gayatri - 17:31
No worries, I will end this conversation now and contact by email, with this conversation included for reference. Thanks again for you time and assistance
You - 17:33
If you decide not to extend past the spend caps, then data is restricted until it resets at the end of your current plan

Thanks so much Dalyer,
I do not want to disable/remove the sim each time because it increases the chances of loosing or damaging it, and I sometimes travel too often that this is not ideal.

Fair enough - I understand.

If I misunderstood, please let me know, if that is correct, please confirm and I'll mark it as the solution to my question.

You have it correct.

When you're roaming outside the EU/UK then you can only use services (outgoing/incoming calls, outgoing texts, data) if you have cash credit on your account to pay for these. (I think that incoming texts may still work but I'm not sure). The key thing is that with 48 you cannot run up a roaming bill because if you use any services then they are paid for from the cash credit balance on your account - if any. So if you have zero cash credit on your account then you can't rack up any charges.

I don't really understand why 48 support couldn't have just told you this! 🤔

The only way that you can incur roaming charges on 48 is if you have cash credit on your account to which services such as incoming/outgoing calls, outgoing texts and data (in some countries) are charged.

If you have no cash credit on your account then you can't incur such charges.

If you're not going to use your 48 SIM at all when roaming then why not just remove it from your phone altogether to be sure that you don't use any services?

Thanks a lot! That is perfect. I also wonder the same about chat support haha, spent 1h trying to get an answer like that! Thanks again.

Your phone may also have an option in the system settings to disable the SIM.

I'm not sure if this is more common with dual SIM phones with two SIMs installed though.

Or maybe enable airplane mode but manually enable wifi and/or Bluetooth if you need them?

Thanks, sure, those are always options, mainly if I was keeping a balance, luckily I've no need for that, so I am not, so I am now happy that no roaming charges can be incurred as a result. Thanks again! Have a great week!
