Calls not working on roaming

I'm in the UK, my data roaming is working and I can send/receive text but I can't make it receive calls. Why?

What happens when you try to make a call?

Any error messages? 

Someone else had a similar issue here and, strangely, putting their SIM into another unlocked phone and trying it there and then moving it back to their own phone fixed the problem for them.

I have no idea why this worked for them and if it might work for you too but worth trying if possible?

Nothing happens no ring tone, my husband is the same and my daughter was in Germany last week and had the same problem. We have android and iPhones.

Maybe try the tip mentioned in the thread that I linked - moving your SIM to another unlocked phone, see what happens there, and then move it back? 

Doesn't make much sense but it seemed to fix the issue for the other poster.

Or maybe try connecting to/through a different local network to see if that makes any difference?
