I will be heading abroad in August for the foreseeable future. I would like to keep my number while I'm gone. I saw that if I don't pay membership for a period of time my number could get recycled. How often would I need to pay for membership to ensure I don't lose my number?

Your account may be suspended if you don't top-up for 6 months.
Even then your account/number can be reactivated for several more months.
I think it's the case that your account will be deleted and number recycled of you don't top-up for something like 12 months or maybe even a bit more than that.
