It's a known ongoing problem with saved card details.

Unfortunately it's still not fixed.
So for now the only way to do it is on the website as you mention.
But I thought that even if your membership/data allowance had expired and you were not on wifi then you could still browse the full 48 website over carrier data?
Is that not the case?

You mean you topped up your cash credit balance or you bought €20 Guido membership?
What is your cash credit balance now (check online or dial *100# to get it)?
What does your online account say about your current membership and expiry date?
Does it list a "next" membership and start date?
What does your My History page say about recent topups/payments/purchases?

Remember that a newly membership does not start immediately if there is in in place which has not yet expired:
Bought membership - can't call/text
