Unless you have been living under a rock with your fingers in your ears, you have no doubt heard about the new craze that is Pokémon Go!
Using a GPS supported map interface, users search for Pokémon in real-time using real locations. The Pokémon themselves are visible using the phones camera function and augmented reality technology. If you’re familiar with the Pokémon games of old, then you’ll enjoy the nostalgic experience as it’s very closely based on the original Pokémon series.
The game has been so popular at release that over the past week the active users have at times overtaken Twitter, Facebook and even Tinder. Reports show that 16% of Irish Pokémon Go users play over four hours a day. It is also having some positive effects on gamers health with 43% of Masters claim to have lost weight from playing the game – wow!
So what does that mean for you as a 48er?
Estimates online vary on how much data the Pokémon Go app actually uses. Reports on data usage vary from 10MBs to 50MBs per hour. That’s a big difference so you make sure you have an active membership and know how much data you have. You can check this information on My48.
Tip:
If you’re using Android, go to Settings – Data Usage and scroll down to see which apps have used the most data. And if you’re using an iPhone go to Settings – Mobile and scroll down to Mobile Data Usage to see the same info.
Choose a side
As well as catching Pokémon, when you reach level 5 you can begin battling in gyms and more importantly, choose a team to join. This is when things get REAL.
Team Instinct (yellow), Team Mystic (blue) and Team Valor (red) all have their own traits and qualities, but mostly it dictates who you’ll be playing with or against. You can’t change the team once you’ve joined so choose carefully.
Research shows that in Ireland 15% of users are Team Instinct, 44% are Team Valor, while 41% are Team Mystic.
Catch ‘em all!
Have fun out there, but remember that it is a game at the end of the day, and that your health and safety and that of those around is more important than catching a Pikachu!
