iMessage activation unsuccessful in settings. Tried a few times. iMessages don’t send when initiating a conversation (have to send as text message) but do if responding to a received iMessage

Could be due to the stupid way that Apple do things necessitating iMessage activation on some networks.
On 48 this can depend on the iPhone sending a UK SMS as part of the activation process.
And this will not get sent if you don't have sufficient cash credit to pay for it (a UK SMS costs 25c on 48).
See here for more info and maybe search for other threads discussing the iMessage activation issue.

I never understand why Apple make things so difficult for users.
A large proportion of queries here relate to problems due to the stupid way that they do things - iPhone, iMessage and facetime activation, roaming problems, difficulties in configuring internet settings or personal hotspot etc.

Hope this helps.

I am not a 48 employee - if you need to contact 48 support then please click here - if the Chat Now option does not appear on that page then keep trying until it does.

You mean you put some cash credit on your account and iMessage managed to activate?

Chatted in with 48 support (credit to Etka for the solution).

Activation for iPhone requires a text in the background to the UK.  I put €10 credit on my 48 account turned off imessages and facetime, switched off the phone.  Restarted the phone turned on imessages and the Phone number activated.
