Unlocked iPhone4 from UK.'Invalid SIM' message. What to do?

I recently moved back to Ireland from the UK, where I was using an unlocked iPhone4 with a Giffgaff (O2) sim card. When I put my activated 48 sim into the iPhone, I keep getting the message 'invalid SIM' and 'SIM failure'. I've tried changing APN details, turning on and off the phone, but nothing changes. Can anyone offer advice, please?

If you are 100% sure that is properly unlocked...
Try putting a small amount of cash credit on your account. iPhones sometimes need activation on certain networks and this process automatically sends a UK SMS which costs 25c.
After doing that switch off and on again then wait a while and see if it activates and starts working.
Blame Apple for this stupid requirement.
