Are there cases where an iPhone needs reactivation via iTunes and to do this on 48 you will need a small amount of credit to pay for the UK texts that are sent? Or is that just for iMessage/FaceTime activation?!? E.g. see here:

http://community.48months.ie/t5/Need-Help/iMessage-amp-FaceTime-Activation/m-p/1068#M327

No Service on iPhone

You may see this error message from time to time on your iPhone. It’s usually displayed where the coverage bars are.

The dreaded “no service” can be a bit of nightmare to fix. Here are a few things you can try to get your phone back up and running.

Try turning iPhone off and then on again. Best to start with the simple stuff.

Sync with iTunes.

Remove the SIM card and verify that it is not damaged or worn. Then reinsert it.

Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.

It might be some rogue app on your phone. Have you installed any apps recently?? If you have try uninstalling the app.

Still getting “no service”?

The next step is to restore the iPhone. Before doing that contact Apple to see if they have an easier solution. You can contact them here http://www.apple.com/support/contact/.

If there is no other option then before restoring your iPhone

NOTE: BFEORE RESTORING YOUR PHONE MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP

See how:

How do I backup and restore my iPhone? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

I never registered my new phone on 48 website, by putting in my new activation code on the website it worked for me.
