People calling me get message saying phone is turned off

Out of nowhere yesterday people have been unable to call me. They get a recorded message saying that my phone is off even though they are standing right next to me and my phone is clearly on, with signal. This problem goes away for about 5 minutes if I then the phone off and on again, but then it goes back to saying that my phone is switched off to anyone calling.
It's an iPhone 5s and has been working for months if not years prior.

I presume something is wrong with my sim and that I might need a new one.

Try switching off, taking the SIM out, gently cleaning it, reinserting it, switching on and see if that helps at all.

Can you try the SIM in another unlocked phone?
