What happens when the 48 SIM is installed in the watch?

Any error messages on the phone or in the device's administration interface?

Is the watch unlocked for use on any network?

https://48.ie/unlock-your-phone

Did you configure the APN settings correctly?

https://community.48.ie/t5/The-Knowledge-Base/Data-APN-Settings-i-e-Internet-amp-MMS-Settings/ta-p/53106

According to Apple, Vodafone and Three are the only "supported" carriers in Ireland:

https://www.apple.com/watch/cellular/#table-apple-watch

I don't know if this means that SIMs from other carriers, including 48, won't work at all or if Apple just don't support such usage?

You'll probably have to ask Apple about that.

If you need to contact 48 support about this then see the links in my signature below.

Is it possible that your watch requires an eSIM?

If so then you won't be able to use it on 48 as they still don't offer eSIMs - only physical SIMs.

The mobile operator has to specifically support this and only Vodafone and Three have this service available in Ireland.

The network has to be the same on the connected iPhone and Watch as it's a specific service that's sharing your phone number.

https://www.apple.com/watch/cellular/

https://n.vodafone.ie/shop/onenumber.html?

https://www.three.ie/support/smart-watches/apple-watch.html

Even if 48 did support eSIMs, it wouldn’t support this. It’s a separate service that needs to be supported, it’s just an eSIM is needed also.

No MVNO operators here in Ireland support this service as of yet - 48, Tesco, Clear, GoMo, Lyca etc.

Even eir as an MNO don’t have support for it yet AFAIK, your only options are Vodafone and Three.

You'll have to ask 48 support if they are ever likely to provide eSIMs but I suspect that they won't be able to give you any specific timeline otherwise they'd probably have announced it already.
