How to ensure that roaming works on forthcoming UK trip?

I'm travelling to the UK next Month, and I need to be able to use my phone when I'm there. The last time I couldn't use my phone, usually when I travel to a different country my phone automactically changes to their own, please can you advise?

If your SIM predates January 2023 then you might want to get a replacement:
