just an update - I am in Italy 24 days after the EU regulation has come into force and I am still only getting 2G.

I have been here the whole time and always 2g. for first 2 weeks it was no service which was a joke while all other people i was with roamed to 4g and they were on gomo or vodafone. I bought a e-sim from the airalo app and got 4g instantly, so its not my phone.

inbeteen all this 48 emailed me saying if you roam over 4 months they will cancel service. What service?

my reccomentations to others is if you are lucky and have a phone that can do e-sim : get the airalo app and download an e-sim. i got 10gb for about 15Euro. it will do.. you are paying 48 a cheap amount for a reason, 😉

When does 48 plan to add 4G roaming? I have noticed for a few EU countries roaming no longer works for 3G as they are shutting down their 3G networks and replacing with 4/5G, and 48 only offer 3G roaming. This means I am only getting 2G/EDGE if I am lucky

the new EU rule

Consumers now will have the right to the same quality of mobile internet abroad, as the one they have at home. Operators providing mobile services should ensure that consumers have access to use 4G

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/IP_22_4198

Haha, I just read the article about the 'new' EU roaming regulations too and was wondering about the very same thing.

Going to Germany in August and as they stopped using 3G completely, so 48month only provided 2G there. If anyone ever used 2G you will know it's absolutely useless nowadays.

The new EU roaming law should force 48month to provide 4G everywhere unless you go to an EU country that doesnt have 4G (don't think it exists)

Now, question is if 48month cares about the EU law at all or if it's business as usual. I would assume that this will need to go to comreg to decide and hopefully force them to comply.

However I would love to be pleasently surprised so anyone roaming from today in another EU country could you please let us know if you get 4G now? I am especially interested in Germany as you only get 2G but will be interesting for other EU countries too.

I've just read this too. I'm going to France later in the month, so I'm very interested to see what happens.

I had a nightmare trying to get 48 to work in Spain & Portugal earlier this year and took it up with Comreg when I got back.

Comreg really need to give 48 a kick in the arse.

It's quite simple. 48 has a contract with us customers which promises roaming and under the new rules if we enjoy 4G/LTE here then they have to provide it in the EU.

I will need mobile coverage for navigation and emergency service access while sailing.

If I can't get 48 to work when I arrive in France or they don't provide the service I'm thinking of getting an Orange.fr eSIM and then taking on 48 in the small claims court when I get back to get re-imbursed, and also get Comreg to act.

If anyone is still having trouble, get on to Comreg please.

Obviously the best outcome would be for 48 to cop on or at worse Comreg to force them to. It will probably progress up from the District Court anyway in which case 48 will be liable for costs. They know that.

I signed up to 48 on the basis of 4G (I don't need 5G) at €7.99 for life .

I've had a few emails back from complaints@48months.zendesk.com

The language is open to interpretation:

"You will get the same benefits for roaming as per your membership plan as you used to get earlier."

No mention of whether or not I can expect to connect and if I do will it be 3G or 4G/LTE. I have asked for clarification.

Interestingly, 48 sent out new T&Cs yesterday by email which seem to infer that they are cracking down on people buying lots of 48 SIMs and selling them for use abroad. This might explain why they have been less than helpful in making their SIMs connect while abroad. Just a theory.

The T&Cs set out lots of fair usage policy for when you connect abroad which I find a bit rich because the people on these forums can't connect abroad in the first place! There is also a mention on the website of them rolling out 4G roaming with their partners abroad but that it's a slow process. The deadline for rolling out was July 1st.

Anyone in Europe now or just back with first hand experience of connecting?

The Three-owned budget mobile operator says customers won’t be able to access services such as Whatsapp or email in Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic until September at the earliest, due to a lack of 3G connectivity in those countries.

Thanks. They knew about the no 3G option (at least for Germany) for about a year now. It's really a ****show at this stage. Every other irish provider has no issues providing 4G internet in the EU but 48months just cannot get it together. At this stage I am sure it's on purpose. It cannot be incompetence anymore.

48 support have confirmed to me that roaming connectivity in France will be 3G, not 4G/LTE which is what I get at home. I've asked Comreg how this squares up with the new EU rules on Roam-Like-At-Home which came into force on July 1st.

I'm glad 48 are confident that I'll be able to connect in France.

I got a reply from Comreg, I've pasted the gist of it below. If you're not getting the service (which is now 4G/LTE in Europe if that's what you get in Ireland), raise a complaint with 48 and talk to Comreg too.

I will have to wait till I get to France on Thursday and if I'm have trouble or just getting 3G I will get back to 48.

I suspect 48 are going to wriggle out of it on a technicality.

From Comreg (edited for typos and clarity):

We have reviewed your query internally regarding the EU Directive and 48's ability to provide a Roam like Home facility while travelling in the EU.

The obligation on providers is contained at Article 4(2) of those Regulations which states that “Roaming providers shall not offer regulated retail roaming services under conditions that are less advantageous than those offered domestically, in particular in terms of the quality of service provided for in the retail contract, where the same generation of mobile communications networks and technologies are available on the visited network.

The obligation is clear that “retail roaming services” should not be “less advantageous than those offered domestically” where the “same generation of mobile communications networks and technologies are available on the visited network.”

We must stress that the Directive is very recent; if you find that you are not receiving a satisfactory service from 48 while travelling in the EU, a formal complaint can be raised with 48 in line with their Code of Practice to allow the service provider to resolve the matter with you.

To lodge a complaint with 48 I would advise that you proceed as outlined below:

- Contact 48 ’s customer care department by email on: complaints@48months.zendesk.com

Full contact details and Code of Practice for 48 can be viewed on: https://48.ie/legal/code-of-practice

- Request details of a unique reference number to identify and track the individual complaint

- Give the full details of your complaint

Got help on twitter (only place I found whre they talk to you directly) and they solved my roaming issue (I'm in Italy ATM)

Here their message (it's crucial that you limit the phone to 3G networks excluding 4G/5G):

Apply the below settings-

1. Turn ON the data roaming and Mobile data.
2. Go to the settings>>mobile networks>>access point name.
3. Delete all the access point name, make it blank and add a new access point name as mentioned below and save it, do not make any other changes.

Name- 48 internet.
APN - https://t.co/Sqj0Bj5WNk

Enable this APN.

Select the Network Mode as 3G if 4G or Lte /Volte isn't working.

The same in Poland. Only 3G networks available and you need to limit your network mode to 2G/3G only in your phone. If you stay on network mode 4G/3G/2G then you are kicked off from service at all and only able to make Emergency calls.
Absolutely useless and ignoring EU law network. We need to keep making complaints to 48 and then to Comreg. Hopefully, they will get any penalty fee and will be forced to change their practice.

Yes I was in UK last week and had no phone service whatsoever. Had to contact my sister while on the train from airport, thankfully their wifi system works. Heading to Spain soon and need my phone to communicate with family and for getting around a new place. Should I consider changing provider???

I’m in France and have got 3G, had to tweak the roaming profile settings as described elsewhere. Don’t change providers, keep complaining. If you’re really stuck in EU, get an Orange 14day visitors Sim or better still an eSIM if you can get on Wi-Fi to download it. It’s all on the orange websites such as orange.fr

My daughter is interrailing around Europe . We did everything to ensure she would have 3G/4G . So Far France has worked - with adjusting settings provided on trouble shoot . Italy nothing worked but could receive and accept calls : texts . Slovenia 3G working so far . 48 have been helpful on the chat box but did not solve the 3G4G in Italy . Thought I would post in case anyone has sons daughters travelling . We thought about giving her a second phone to use with a local SIM . Will defo do that the next time .
